A Simple Christmas Wish…

Or should that read: a wish for a simple Christmas?

Towards the end of October I start seeing stars, baubles and lights everywhere I look and I end up becoming a festive juggernaut before Halloween is even over! But because of a difficult year for our family financially I’ve needed to reassess my gung-ho approach to the festive season. ¬†Thankfully I have amazing kids who understand the value (and sometimes lack of) money and never really ask for anything extravagant. They also share my love of all things pre-loved, hand-me-down, revamped, upcycled and homemade!

I really am SO blessed to have such beautiful people as my kids ūüíĖ

So this year we are celebrating our very first “Thrifting Christmas”

This may seem a little strange, but hang in there with me and I’ll explain coz there’s a few simple rules…

GIFTS… Every gift must be

  1. Pre-loved / second-hand
  2. Collected from verge collection or acquired for free
  3. Upcycled, revamped, restored or handmade
  4. “Brown paper packages tied up with string”… wrap all gifts in brown paper (or old sheet music) with some cute ribbon – SO much cheaper, and so very cute!!

HOME DECOR… Take everything down a notch

Stress less about getting your home festive fabulous by going with the “less is more” approach. This was hard for me to get my head around at first, but now I’ve totally embraced it! Here’s some ideas to inspire you to have a simplified festive season this year…

  1. Only hang gutter lighting plus one other lighted feature outside your home. Beautifully simple and simply beautiful… and did I mention QUICKER!

2. Use an old wreath or make a fresh one with local foliage and team it with only battery powered lights and a single ribbon. Gorgeous!

3. Try trimming your tree with only white lights (lots of them) and top with a star or angel. This was hard for me to wrap my head around at first, but now there’s no going back… it’s stunning!

4. Place candles (real or battery powered) in washed out jars and tin cans with some greenery and ribbon to enhance the festive atmosphere around your home.

5. Use the greenery surrounding your house and neighborhood to add crisp, fragrant life inside your home.

6. Put those now unused baubles inside a vase or bowl to spruce up lamp tables and mantles, you’d be surprised how brilliant this looks.

7. Make festive bunting from old book pages, scrap paper, a Sharpie or stamps and hang on twine. Super cheap and easy (two of my fav things!)

8. Create your own stylish chalkboard out of an ugly thrifted painting or print out some holiday typography on heavy card and put it in an old or thrifted frame. Pop them on your mantle or hang on the wall for instant Christmas cheer that costs you next to nothing!

Most importantly, don’t get so caught up with preparations that you don’t get to spend time with those you love (it kinda defeats the purpose of the season). Get your family and friends¬†involved. Share ideas. Be creative. Be inspired… but above all, have fun! after all, ‘Tis the Season to be Jolly!!

Party Season Revolution!

OK…. so anyone who knows me knows how thrifty I can be. I <3¬†a bargain!! And let’s face it, with the world economy the way it is who doesn’t?!
So, today I was visiting an op-shop I regularly haunt (I’ll be surprised if I don’t end up on their Christmas card list!) when I was blown away by how many beautiful dresses & gowns they had for sale… and I mean stunning! (See pics for details)
So I was wondering, who has somewhere special to go this party season & needs a gorgeous dress/gown but doesn’t want to pay the earth?? I will be glad to take a people around to get all frocked up!!
Why buy new?
We live in such a watesful society, but why not
a) buy a stunning dress/gown at a quarter of the original price
b) help out the less fortunate by purchasing said prettiness from a company who gives BACK to those in need.
When you’re done with it pass it on to someone else, or donate it again so someone else can love it & others benefit from to next sale!
Get on board… It’s the spirit of truly looking & feeling fab this party season!!

Aaaaaannd we’re back in business!

Wow!!

It’s been a crazy few months for me & my wee family…fundraising for sporting & school trips, establishing my Hair & Beauty side of the business, finding a suitable new home & moving house! Top that with exams for my teenagers & you can imagine how nuts my household has been.

But with the move I was able to sift through the years of accumulated furniture, craft supplies, photographs & fabric to locate some long lost & overlook gems …now THAT got my creative juices flowing!! Council verge collection in my area added fuel to my creative vintage fire, so that now i have several pieces almost ready for reveal. Here are a few before & in-progress pics to abate your curiosity

saved this wee gem from the verge collection. She's in pretty bad shape now, but will ooze Vintage chic when I'm finished with her! ...now, about that rust...

saved this wee gem from the verge collection. She’s in pretty bad shape now, but will ooze Vintage chic when I’m finished with her! …now, about that rust…

Endeavoring to find an economical & environmentally friendly way to remove the rust from my newly acquired vintage chrome dining chair, I sought guidance from the fountain of all modern wisdom & knowledge….ie: YouTube

There were loads of videos to sort through & I struggled to find something that would suit this particular project. However, before I threw my laptop across the room i stumbled onto a method for removing rust from chromed auto parts…even working on vintage cars! And THAT got my attention. No acid baths. No chemical aids that said item would need to soak in overnight (like how was that going to happen). And no harsh, toxic waste to try and dispose of afterwards.

A folded piece of aluminium foil (shiny side out) dipped in warm water, vinegar or Diet Coke

A folded piece of aluminium foil (shiny side out) dipped in warm water, vinegar or Diet Coke and a whole lot of elbow grease yielded a fabulous result, allowing this forgotten vintage beauty to really SHINE.

I found three promising methods, all of which used a folded piece of aluminium foil as the gentle abrasive. First I tried plain warm water, and was surprised at how well that worked considering there was no acidic element. Second was cleaning vinegar, which worked a little faster than the plain water. Lastly was the Diet Coke…yes, Diet Coke! This worked just as well as the vinegar, although I decided to wipe it over with vinegar afterwards so as to neutralise the citric acid found in the Diet Coke in case it ended up further corroding the already compromised chrome finish. I was amazed that such a simple method could bring about such drastic & gleaming results. I will still need to have the frame re-chromed, but the homemade aluminium pad also smoothed out some of the pitting without scratching the chrome which was an added bonus!

And look at that SHINE!

One of the treasures hidden amongst the wasteland that was my teenage daughter’s bedroom (anyone with a teenager can totally relate)

Converting this dated Queen Anne style desk from the 80's into a stylish hall table. High end Vintage Class

Converting this dated Queen Anne style desk from the 80’s into a stylish hall table. High end Vintage Class

was this Queen Anne style desk from the 80’s ….Aaahhh the 80’s ….not exactly vintage I hear you say, nor was that era known for stylish decor. This particular item had been revamped once before from the original glossy cream painted finish to a chocolate brown-the favoured colour for my then very non-girly daughter, who upon me suggesting black, stated “I’m not a vampire like you mum!!” …Lol alrighty then. Chocolate brown it is *rolls eyes*

I gleaned an idea from the internet whilst perusing http://www.apartmenttherapy.com  and decided to convert this dated desk into a stylish hall table.

The drawers will be replaced by shelving with a single smaller drawer at the top. I can picture this piece with a beautiful big mirror above it, a vase of fresh flowers on top & an umbrella stand beside. Baskets for gloves, scarves & sunglasses in the shelving perhaps.

The styling possibilities are endless really. Keep it elegant and formal, or team it with modern accessories so the table itself becomes a vintage anchor to the look, giving it a subtle depth.

In addition to these up-cycle & re-purposed hopefuls, I’ve got a steadily growing client base for My Vintage Edge ¬†Hair & Beauty.

Along with cutting hair 2 nights a week from my boy’s rugby club, The Southern Lions, I’m taking appointments during the day and on weekends too. Everything from simple cuts to colours, foils & styling for special occasions.

I have some exciting things lined up regarding this side of my venture, including the possibility of working on the set of a fashion shoot & holding some Vintage Style Workshops in a fun, relaxed party style setting that will feel more like a teenage sleepover than a snooty, formal class!!!

I can’t wait for things to take full flight….and to take you all along for the ride

Since summer has taken up permanent residence here in Perth, I’ve chosen this outfit for the blog today. Seriously, nothing says “summer” to me like turn up jeans & a crisp, white cotton summer shirt! Teamed with these gorgeous turquoise silk flats & asian inspired bangles (I love the cinnabar bangle). Add a leopard print foldover clutch & button earrings for a little sexy edge! Needless to say, red lips are a must. Have fun today! C xx

Vintage Wisdom

We live in a society that worships excess in so many wasteful ways, and yet places little value on a healthy mind, body & soul. ¬†Jennifer Lawrence has taken a stand regarding the emdemic issue of eating disorders. I say endemic & not “epidemic” because thisJennifer Lawrence Wisdom problem has not snuck up on the human race. It is not a disease that randomly consumes healthy men, women & children haphazardly. ¬†It has become ingrained in our society. Developed by corporations through media. ¬†Tolerated & encouraged by western society. Promoted as BEAUTY.

Should we, as the human race, not be less concerned with diets that starve, and more concerned with what comes out of our mouths? ¬†Should we not be less concerned with what the media deems to be “beautiful”, and more concerned with having a beautiful mind & heart? ¬†…the problem with aiming for “perfection” is that it can never be achieved. ¬†We are imperfect beings. That’s what makes us beautiful.

Good Morning…

now to face the day!

now to face the day!

Nothing says “good morning” better than wrapping both hands around a steaming mug containing your brew of choice. Something magical happens deep in your soul when the heat seeps into the palms of your hands, tingles rising up your arms & you get that gentle quiver at the back of your neck… surely it’s not just me! ¬†Give it a try this morning, see what happens.
